**Meta Enhances Smart Glasses Privacy: Camera Disables Upon Tampering with Privacy Light**
Meta is rolling out a crucial software update for its smart glasses, which will automatically disable the camera if the device detects any physical tampering with or destruction of the privacy LED light. This significant move comes amidst heightened public scrutiny and growing concerns regarding the privacy implications of its wearable technology.
The update is specifically designed to counteract "modders" who have taken extreme measures, such as physically drilling into the LED light to disable its functionality. Meta has previously attempted to deter such tampering; for instance, with its second-generation glasses, blocking the light with tape would trigger a prompt asking users to uncover it. However, many individuals found various workarounds for these earlier measures, necessitating a more robust solution.
Alex Himel, Meta’s VP of wearables, informed The Verge a few weeks ago that this privacy-focused update was in development. This discussion took place shortly after Meta launched cheaper versions of its glasses without Ray-Ban branding. At the time, Himel acknowledged the company's awareness of increasing misuse alongside the wider adoption of these devices.
The timing of this update is particularly sensitive, as Meta currently faces online criticism regarding reported plans to integrate facial recognition technology into its glasses. Furthermore, the company has dealt with reports of malicious actors using its devices to harass young women. These escalating privacy concerns have prompted various public venues to consider banning the devices altogether. Recently, Syracuse.com reported that New York State would begin prohibiting camera glasses from all courtrooms later this month, following similar actions by Philadelphia courts and cruise lines restricting smart glasses use in common areas. This latest update underscores Meta's ongoing efforts to address and mitigate privacy challenges surrounding its smart glasses.
